3 superfoods to burn fat and aid metabolism

By taking even the most cursory of glances at health websites scattered across the Internet, you'll find a deep ocean of information designed to help you to lose weight, burn fat or build muscle. "The water acted as a calorie-free appetiser. It filled participants' stomachs, so they reported less hunger just prior to eating," said lead author, Dr Brenda Davy. 

It's also thought that good, old-fashioned water can aid metabolism due to the inner workings of our body - our system has to work hard to increase the temperature of the water we swallow to bring it into line with that of our core.

Yellow bell peppers

Though vitamin C deficiency is rare in Australia, it's still important to make sure that you're eating your fill. Aussies get around 40 per cent of their intake from vegetables, with another 19 per cent from fruits, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The yellow bell pepper is positively bursting with vitamin C, with just one of them holding almost 350 millligrams of the nutrient - that's well over three times the amount of a large orange, according to Fitness Magazine.

But why is vitamin C important to your weight loss aspirations? Dr Carol Johnston, associate director of the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University, explains:

"The body needs vitamin C to produce a molecule called carnitine, which helps muscles use fat for energy and, in turn, boosts metabolism."

Any vegetable that's dark, green and leafy

Foods that fit into this category are bound to be crammed with both fibre and iron. Eating them allows our bodies to more easily absorb vitamins and minerals. In turn, our metabolism will be fired up, and fat will be burned more easily. What's more, these vegetables are typically low in calories, but replete in antioxidants which can lend great benefits to our overall health.
