A Mediterranean diet can help slow signs of ageing, according to new research

For years, doctors have been promoting the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet. This style of eating is reminiscent of the way cultures such as Italy, Spain, Egypt, Greece and Israel have been eating for centuries, and has been shown to be beneficial for heart health, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, recently, new research revealed that the Mediterranean Diet isn't just good for the heart, it also has anti-ageing benefits.

How does the Mediterranean Diet slow ageing?

The Mediterranean Diet helps reduce signs and symptoms of ageing by protecting DNA and keeping cells healthy. A study published in the prestigious British Medical Journal followed about 4,700 middle-aged women, and surveyed their diet choices. They then examined the women's DNA, to surprising results.

The researchers found that the women who followed a Mediterranean diet had longer telomeres, the protective caps at the end of chromosomes. As we age and our cells replicate, our telomeres become shorter and shorter. Therefore, long telomeres are indicative of fewer symptoms of ageing.

"Our findings showed that healthy eating, overall, was associated with longer telomeres," Marta Crous-Bou, a postdoctoral fellow in the Channing Division of Network Medicine and co-author of the study, said. "However, the strongest association was observed among women who adhered to the Mediterranean diet."

What kinds of food are included in the diet?

The Mediterranean diet is healthy because it contains good-for-you ingredients. Vegetables make up a significant portion of the diet, with fresh fruits, whole grains, fish and shellfish, nuts and seeds, and lean meats also included. The diet is primarily plant-based, and includes a significant amount of omega-3s. It is also associated with olive oil, a monounsaturated fat with numerous benefits for health.
