Boost your fertility naturally: 6 foods that may help you get pregnant

Research is starting to show how vital nutrition is for healthy fertility

It’s not news that good nutrition is essential for a healthy pregnancy.  For the nine months a baby spends inside its mother’s womb, it will only have access to the nutrients she takes in through her diet.

Parents-to-be learn early on about the need to get enough of the right nutrients for their baby to develop normally.  They’re also warned to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and high-risk, bacteria-containing foods that may hurt the unborn foetus.

They hear less, however, about the diet they should aim to follow in the months leading up to conception. Research suggests that couples who want to conceive should start changing their dietary habits a minimum of 3 months before they want to get pregnant.  This means that by the time they are ready, their bodies’ nutrient stores are at levels that support optimum fertility.

Eating for fertility isn’t just for the ladies

It takes two people to make a baby, and both need to contribute healthy, fertile sperm or egg cells to the equation.  Several nutrients support healthy conception and pregnancy in either of two ways:

Firstly, certain vitamins and minerals help to maintain healthy sperm and ova before conception.  These include antioxidants such as Selenium, Zinc and Vitamin E.  Iodine also supports thyroid gland health, which in turn contributes to normal ovulation.

Secondly, the unborn baby needs several nutrients as it develops and grows.  These include the Omega 3 essential fatty acid DHA, along with Vitamin B12, Folic acid (also known as folate), Iron and Calcium.

Fertility-boosting foods to include in your diet

It’s always healthiest to get your nutrients through fresh, whole foods if possible.  Of course, many hopeful parents do take multivitamins and other supplements – but ideally, this will be alongside, not instead of, a healthy diet. Great foods to eat more of if you and your partner want to get pregnant include:

  • Seaweed: rich in both Zinc and Iodine, seaweed can support both normal foetal development and fertility in the mother-to-be.
  • Salmon: in addition to being packed with protein, salmon is high in the essential Omega 3 fatty acid DHA, which supports normal eye and brain development.  Plus it contains Vitamin D, which is vital for bone health and immunity.
  • Dark green, leafy vegetables: veges like kale, silver beet, spinach, and cabbage provide high levels of B vitamins (especially folic acid), plus important antioxidants.
  • Brazil Nuts: one of nature’s richest Selenium sources, Brazil nuts are also rich in Vitamin E, Magnesium and Calcium, making 1-2 nuts daily an ideal fertility food.
  • Avocado: high in natural antioxidants called carotenoids, avocados are also a great source of Vitamin E.  This means they’re not only great nutrition for couples who want to get pregnant, but they also support general immunity and vision.
