Though many popular beverages come and go, orange juice is one that has endured through the ages. Whether you're having a glass with your eggs on toast in the morning, or sipping a cool, refreshing pitcher in a sunny park, orange juice is a drink that is loved by practically all.

Not only is orange juice wonderfully tasty, it's also packed with vitamin C. This versatile nutrient is a strong antioxidant which can help bolster the immune system and protect against a variety of illnesses. It's also highly beneficial to bone, blood vessel and skin health. 

Just when you thought that there couldn't be any more strings to vitamin C's proverbial bow, a new study has found that elderly people who drink 500 millilitres of the stuff per day - around a large glass - can markedly improve their brain function.

Of course, our brain performs a myriad of collective duties, but it's thought that orange juice can aid several of the most immediate, improving our speech, memory and reaction times.

Researchers at the University of Reading, England, are of the opinion that these remarkable results are down to the natural substances known as flavonoids - and orange juice is full to bursting with them.

The study enlisted 37 volunteers of good health, aged between 60 and 81, with each asked to drink 500ml of orange juice every day over a two-month period. However, before the experiment began in earnest, each participant was to undergo simple reaction, memory and verbal fluency examinations. After the two months of orange juice drinking had elapsed, those same tests were taken again - with scores improving by an incredible eight per cent. 

Fabulous flavonoids

The researchers are of the opinion that flavonoids can bolster brain function as they trigger what are known as the 'signalling pathways' of the hippocampus - the part of the brain used for learning and storing information. What's more, flavonoids can also help with blood circulation and safeguard neurons, helping them to transmit vital signals.

Orange juice is not the only foodstuff which is known to boost brain function - here are a few others:

 - Wild salmon

Fish that live in very deep water, such as salmon, are replete in omega-3 fatty acids, as well as several anti-inflammatory substances - essential for healthy brain function.

 - Avocado

The avocado is a comparatively fatty fruit, but that shouldn't put you off its brain boosting charms. The fat found in avocado is a monounsaturated fat, which can considerably aid blood flow. In turn, this contributes to a healthier brain.
