An article featured in Psychology Today states that eating a portion of these foods can markedly improve cognitive function, as well as staving off symptoms of depression, anxiety and a whole raft of other mental health conditions. It's true - one of the most efficient ways to get yourself into a good headspace is to ensure that you're eating the right things.

This is because your stomach has its own nervous system, just as the brain does. Indeed, the two organs complement each other more than you might think, and eating well will benefit both of them in a mutual manner. Let's take a look at a few foods that can help your mental health, and how they do it:  

Yoghurt 

We've listed yoghurt, but the truth is, almost all fermented foods are outstandingly good for your mental wellbeing. Sauerkraut, kefir and tempeh are all replete in probiotics, which are often referred to as the 'healthy' bacteria. While probiotics are remarkably beneficial when they're residing in our gut, there has been numerous studies into how well they can affect our minds, too.

Superfoods can aid not only your physical health, but also your mental wellbeing.

One such study was carried out by academics of the Leiden Institute of Brain and Cognition, in the Netherlands. It was discovered that by eating fermented foods regularly, sad moods were less frequent, and there was a lower risk of developing depressive symptoms if sadness did occur.

"Our findings shed an interesting new light on the potential of probiotics to serve as adjuvant or preventive therapy for depression," Lorenza S. Colzato, who lead the study, told Time.

Green, leafy vegetables

Is there nothing that these enduringly healthy foods cannot do? Not content with simply being all-round excellent supplements for your health, green, leafy vegetables, especially those of the dark variety, aid your body in the production of neurotransmitters. What does this mean?

Well, spinach, broccoli and the like are jam-packed with a vitamin known as folate, which, when eaten, helps your brain and body to produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. This duo can also help to regulate the mood, so the more green veggies that you eat, the happier you could be. 

A study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that people who ate the most folate were at far less risk of developing depressive symptoms than those that consumed the least, which is all round great news for fans of the humble green stuff!
