New evidence shows that aged garlic supports normal blood pressure levels

New evidence shows that aged garlic supports normal blood pressure levels

Why worry about your blood pressure levels?

Blood pressure a hot health topic not just here in Australia, but across the globe as well.  An estimated 25% of adults worldwide have high blood pressure1 , which can have a serious impact on their health if left unchecked.

No wonder then that keeping your blood pressure at a healthy level is one of the key areas your doctor is likely to focus on.  If you haven’t had yours checked recently, speak to your doctor or other health professional.

The Australian Heart Foundation categorises normal blood pressure as 120/80mmHg2  or under.  The higher your numbers get above this level, the more impact it is likely to have on your health.

How to keep your blood pressure at a healthy normal level

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the recommendations for supporting healthy normal blood pressure are really just about living a healthy lifestyle.

That means.

  • Eating a balanced diet that is rich in plant-based foods, i.e. fruit, vegetables, legumes and wholegrains; plus lean protein, low-fat dairy, and healthy oils
  • Reducing your salt (sodium) intake\
  • Drinking less alcohol, and quitting if you smoke
  • Keeping your body weight at a healthy level
  • Moving and getting active more often: aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days

The latest research, carried out at the University of Adelaide, showed that aged garlic extract had a significant positive impact on blood pressure.

This 12-week study was double blinded and placebo-controlled. It involved measuring the effect of aged garlic extract on the blood pressure levels of 79 participants. Each person was randomly assigned into one of four groups. Researchers then gave members of each group either a placebo, or a standardised aged garlic extract dose (240mg, 480mg or 960mg) every day.

Study results showed that aged garlic significantly reduced participants’ blood pressure levels by an average of nearly 12mmHg over the 12 weeks.

Aged garlic extract: a very different kind of garlic

Aged garlic extract is unique form of garlic that starts life as organically grown garlic cloves. The cloves are naturally aged in controlled conditions for up to 20 months.

During this process, the harsh, unstable oil-soluble sulfur compounds that give raw garlic its characteristic odour transform into milder, stable, odourless ones. These new compounds are only found in aged garlic, and they appear to be responsible for its blood pressure and heart health benefits.

Additionally, the aging process results in an odour-free extract that causes none of the harsh side effects (e.g. stomach irritation) of fresh garlic.

If you’d like to try taking aged garlic extract, speak to your local health food store expert, who can recommend the right product for you.
