Why are foods high in amino acids exceedingly good for your heart?

Here's a little factoid that will come as a shock to precisely no one - smoking is horrifically bad for your health. Why, then, do Australians continue to do it? It's no secret that nicotine is highly addictive, which is chiefly the reason keeping almost 3 million Australians in the expensive, unhealthy habit, according to figures released by the Heart Foundation.

Another unhealthy trait is to partake in a sedentary lifestyle. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare state that between 69 and 72 per cent of Aussie adults are not getting enough exercise, which can lead to a range of negative conditions, including obesity and diabetes. It stands to reason, then, that quitting smoking and partaking in regular exercise are all cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle.

Now, a new study has found that eating a diet rich in particular amino acids in certain meats and proteins could potentially be as good for you as cutting cigarettes out of your life, or hitting the treadmill on a regular basis.  

Researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK, analysed the effects of seven different amino acids on approximately 2,000 women who had a healthy body mass index. Each of their diets was investigated, as well as blood pressure, and vessel thickness and stiffness.

It was discovered that women who ate a diet high in amino acids recorded the lowest levels of blood pressure and arterial stiffness. However, it should be noted the the food source of these amino acids is of a certain importance with regards to how the organic compounds can benefit your overall cardiovascular health.   

Amino acids taken from plant-based sources tended to result in a lower blood pressure, whereas those found in meats aligned themselves with greater arterial flexibility.  

Protein power 

"This research shows a protective effect of several amino acids on cardiovascular health. Increasing intake from protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, dairy produce, beans, lentils, broccoli and spinach could be an important and readily achievable way to reduce people's risk of cardiovascular disease," said Dr Amy Jennings, of UEA's Norwich Medical School, who led the study.

Each of the the amino acids in question - tyrosine, leucine, histidine, glycine, glutamic acid, cysteine and arginine - were found to offer at least some level of decreased blood pressure. The researchers were still taken aback, though, at just how much they can affect our overall health:

"The really surprising thing that we found is that amino acid intake has as much of an effect on blood pressure as established lifestyle risk factors such as salt intake, physical activity and alcohol consumption. For arterial stiffness, the association was similar to the magnitude of change previously associated with not smoking," concluded Dr Jennings.
