GLOSSARY

BACTERIA

Bacteria are single-celled, or simple, organisms. Though small, bacteria are powerful and complex, and they can survive in extreme conditions. Bacteria have a tough protective coating that boosts their resistance to white blood cells in the body.

DIGESTIVE ENZYMES

Digestive enzymes are substances produced by our bodies that help us to digest the foods we eat. These enzymes are secreted by the various parts of our digestive system and they help to break down food components such as proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

DIGESTIVE TRACT

Probiotics are the good bacteria in your gut, while prebiotics are the food that feeds your gut bacteria (or gut flora). When taken together, prebiotics and probiotics work to keep your gut in balance. A balanced gut is beneficial to your health and wellbeing — supporting your digestion while boosting your immune system and mood.

ENZYME

Help speed up chemical reactions in the human body. They bind to molecules and alter them in specific ways. They are essential for respiration, digesting food, muscle and nerve function, among thousands of other roles.

GUT FLORA

Bacteria and other organisms that live inside the intestines. They help digest food. Vitamins such as biotin and vitamin K are made by gut flora. Also called gut microflora, intestinal flora, intestinal microflora, and microflora.

LEAKY GUT

When the tight junctions of intestinal walls become loose, the gut becomes more permeable, which may allow bacteria and toxins to pass from the gut into the bloodstream.

MICROBIOME

The collection of all the microorganisms and viruses that live in a given environment, including the human body or part of the body, such as the digestive system.

PATHOGENS

Your gut will always contain bad bacteria, but the balance should be in favour of the good. When your gut bacteria get out of balance and you have more bad than good a wide range of health issues can be triggered including in some instances chronic illnesses. A diet high in refined, sugary food and drink allows bad bugs to grow so reduce your intake of these sorts of things to help your gut’s good guys out.

PREBIOTICS

Prebiotics as nondigestible substances that act as food for the gut microbiota. Essentially, prebiotics stimulate growth or activity of certain healthy bacteria that live in your body.

PROBIOTICS

Are special strains of friendly, beneficial bacteria that occurs naturally in our digestive system and play an essential role in our overall well-being.

SEROTONIN

Serotonin is a chemical messenger, called a neurotransmitter, that acts on blood vessels and pain control pathways in the brain. Serotonin is also responsible for controlling mood, attention, sleep, and pain.
